342: Is It Over...?
[info]sugar_kun

Disc 3 started with a very apt question: "Is it over...?" Emo Kid wondered to himself as he lay in bed. Sadly, it isn't, and we press on.

More apologies about the slow progress. Inventory at my job is really eating up my days, and Flik works at night, so that gives us maybe a couple hours a day to get through this game. Hopefully time will free up soon, but we'll keep doing what we can!

It feels good to get through another disc, but I'm not sure what to say about it. We really just tried to barrel through it, though I doubt it would be any less of a blur if we had actually taken our time. The plot is getting way too convoluted, and I gave up on it when they started getting the GFs involved. It's almost like they couldn't decide what to focus on, so they threw in a lot of everything. The storyline is really all over the place, and it's not coming together fast enough to make it interesting.

The gameplay is still bearable enough. Flik's Triple Triad and card-modding skills keep the magic drawing system at bay. Our over-powered protagonist is still making boss battles laughable, and the Enc-none skill makes frolicking through enemy-infested areas a breeze. Regardless, I can't wait to put this game behind us.

I'm determined to report back with the end of disc 3, or, more ambitiously, the end of FF8. I'll try to have some words about Avatar: The Last Airbender next time, too; It's been difficult to keep the DS in my hands for more than a few minutes lately.

If you're out there, let us know!

357: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side...

Well, we finally made it... Disc 2.

It only took us eight days; Pathetic, I know. All I can really say in our defense is that we're easily distracted, and FFVIII doesn't exactly hold our attention. Excuses aside, though, I know we could have done better. We could be playing another game by now... any other game.

I hate that I'm getting used to the junctioning system. No, that doesn't make it good. A system that takes almost a quarter of a game to become even remotely bearable is not good. Thanks to some walkthroughs, however, it did work in our favor. Emo Kid (that's our very clever name for Squall) is ridiculously overpowered thanks to the junctioning system. There isn't a boss fight so far that's given us any trouble. That saves us from grinding, at least. Which is good in a game that pretty much discourages leveling up.

The plot isn't getting any better, either. I try to ignore it, mostly, but what I do catch is just silly. Was I supposed to be surprised that Seifer meandered so casually over to the dark side? And that villain... is she supposed to be intimidating? There was hardly any build up. I was abruptly informed of the existance of a malevolent sorceress and then there she was... doing evil things... I guess.

Anyway, I'll stop picking on the game... for now. Obviously it's at least playable, or we wouldn't be playing it. Tomorrow we venture into the second disc, just another step closer to the end of FFVIII.

 And we're off! ...Sort of.

We spent some time grinding for AP, and Flik played enough Triple Triad to take Yugi Moto's place as King of Games, but we're finally really delving into disc one of Final Fantasy VIII. Time's going to be tight for the next few weeks, but there's always room for a little gaming, and I feel like we'll have this one out of the way in no time.

On the Duel Screen, I've started a solo adventure on Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. This game is proving even better than I expected, and I was optimistic about it! Not a masterpiece, but definitely loads of fun. I never thought I would be so happy to hear Sokka's voice, but I'm impressed  that they cared enough to bring in the original voice cast for a handheld title.

And with that, I need to cut this short; no rest for the Avatar. I'll be back soon with more updates!

365 Days of Gaming
[info]sugar_kun
2 friends. Over 40 video games. 365 days.

My trusty sidekick and I have taken on the challenge of playing through as many games as possible in the span of a year. It all started as the realization that I hadn't beaten all or even the majority of my game collection. As a gamer, that never sat right with me. I decided I would make time for my favorite hobby and see the end of each of my games.

With motivation dwindling, I thought a deadline might be just the thing I needed. One thing led to another when my friend (Flik is his usual handle) got involved, and this is the outcome. It's become sort of a nerdy little project of ours, mostly something to fill spare time.

We're off to a rather unenthusiastic start with Final Fantasy VIII. It probably wasn't the smartest idea to procrastinate until the night of the start date, but it's difficult to summon the sheer amount of will power it takes to play this game. Neither of us are happy about it, but the game is at least started. We're going to get it out of the way and move on to better things.

I'm not sure who, if anyone, is reading this, but I'll keep you posted!
